Volvos to take you to Technopark

Starting on the 18th of November, state-of-the-art Volvo 8400 city buses will start to ply to Technopark as Trivandrum joins the select band of Indian cities including Bangalore, Navi Mumbai and Pune to operate the world’s most sophisticated ultra-low floor, city buses.

The first eight Volvos wait to be flagged off

The first eight Volvos were launched today(17 November 2009) at a glittering function at the Central Stadium by Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan. The function was attended by Union Minister for External Affairs & Trivandrum MP, Shashi Tharoor, Ports Minister M. Vijayakumar, Transport Minister Jose Thettayil and LSG Minister Paloli Mohammedkutty among others.

The Volvo 8400 in KSRTC and JNNURM livery

The Volvos are part of a fleet of 30 which will soon be plying on Trivandrum’s roads. Another 120 low-floor, non-AC buses will also join them over the coming months as part of the JNNURM programme’s urban transport enhancement initiative.

The Volvos interior is functional and comfortable

Routes

To start with, there will be three routes with more to be added as the remaining buses arrive.

Kovalam - Thiruvallam - East Fort - Palayam - Pattoor - Pettah - Kumarapuram - Medical College - Ulloor - Sreekariyam - Technopark

Kowdiar - Vazhuthacaud - Thycaud - East Fort - Eanchakkal - Chackai - Beach - Airport

Sasthamangalam - Thampanoor - Palayam - Airport

Timing and Fare

The buses should run every 30 mins or so on the Kovalam - Technopark route to begin with, with the frequency eventually coming up to once in 10 minutes. The service will currently be between 6 AM and 9.50 PM.

Fares start at Rs 10 for the first 5 Kilometers and Rs 1.5 for every additional Kilometer, probably going up to about Rs 35 for an East Fort to Technopark trip. Much cheaper than an autorickshaw, and with a great deal more comfort.

Try it out!

Folks, do try the service out starting tomorrow and try to use it as much as possible to substitute for your personal transport. It also offers greater flexibility than company buses or cabs. Hopefully, this will be the first step towards implementing the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), approved by the Cabinet, which will also run from the city to Technopark.

No longer will techies in Bangalore (or Bengaluru) lay claim to being the only ones to commute in true world-class style. From tomorrow, everyone at Technopark can travel in style too!!

Luxury, AC, low-floor Volvo city buses will be running to Technopark from November 18th.
